This signature 9-day journey combining Rio de Janeiro, the Iguassu Falls and Buenos Aires provides a great little introduction to South America which is ideal for the first time traveller to the region.
Rio de Janeiro is one of Latin America’s iconic cities which should be on the wish list of any traveller to South America. It is vibrant, exciting, immensely friendly and great fun. It is also considerably safer than you might think. The Iguassu Falls are always a joy to visit but get very crowded at weekends. Buenos Aires offers gourmet cuisine, fabulous shopping, good nightlife and superb cultural activities from seductive tango to top-notch opera and long sporting traditions from world-class polo to great football.
One of the great things about this itinerary is that it can be done in reverse order if you prefer and offers the flexibility to add on an extension. From Buenos Aires you could travel to Mendoza and the vineyards, for example, or across to Bariloche and the lakes district or down to Patagonia to visit the Perito Moreno glacier. Another option from Buenos Aires would be to take a ferry across the River Plate to Uruguay. In Brazil you could travel into the Pantanal for great wildlife spotting, including the chance to sight jaguars, relax in the appealing coastal town of Paraty, explore the Amazon or visit the North Eastern cities of Recife, Salvador and Fortaleza or travel into the interior to Ouro Preto for a better understanding of Portuguese colonial heritage.
